The definition of a “Competent Person”:
The term "Competent Person" is used in many OSHA standards and documents. A “Competent Person" is defined by OSHA as:
(A Person) “who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them" [29 CFR 1926.32(f)].
Additionally, OSHA requires that all personnel who may be exposed to fall hazards be trained by a “Competent Person”
(Training requirements) The employer shall assure that each employee has been trained, as necessary, by a competent person… [29 CFR 1926.503 (a)(1)]
From a practical point of view there should be a Competent Person for Fall Prevention on every construction Project. We all know that conditions change, equipment moves, people get lazy. A “Competent Person” can save his or her company thousands of dollars by spotting something wrong and correcting the problem before someone gets injured (or worse) or your company is observed in violation of a standard.
TPS offers a 24-hour Competent Person for Fall Prevention (CPFP) level OSHA compliant fall prevention training course that covers the application of safety principles in the following areas
i. Anchors
ii. Lifelines
iii. Lanyards
iv. Harnesses
All personnel attending a Total Pro Safety CPFP course will leave with a greater understanding of the OSHA requirements placed on each employer and the industry’s response to managing these requirements.
By way of training and/or experience, a competent person is knowledgeable of applicable standards, is capable of identifying workplace hazards relating to the specific operation and has the authority to correct them.
So, how do you know that your “competent person” really is “competent”? Simple, a TPS certification makes it easy to know that your “Competent Person” knows all that he/she is.
